YANKS MEET LIMEYS

SCHEDULE for MAY 18-29,  2007

American dancers who think about traveling to England always wonder: Is the country dancing in England just like ours? And how would I get to dance with the English people?  This trip will give you a partial answer to the first question while supplying the opportunity to do the second. This trip will also take you to some of the most beautiful spots in Southern England.

Henry (A Yank who has visited England countless times & been on two year-long Fulbright Teacher Exchanges to England) and Jacqui (A Limey who has lived in England all of her life) will be your host & hostess throughout this trip.  We are retired and spend half the year in England and half the year in the U.S.

What I am about to outline is the basic structure of the twelve day trip.  Photographs of our previous Yanks Meet Limeys tours can be found here (2003) and here (2001)

We will pick you up at the airport (preferably Gatwick) on Friday and take you to your hotel in South London.

Friday May 18: morning: Arrive in England, we take you, by minivan, to Travelodge, Caterham. We stay here 2 nights.
Evening: Dance at Beckenham Folk Dance Club

Afternoon: short walk, or acquaint yourself with Winchester.
Evening: ECD + Contras, Littleton Memorial Hall. Caller: Ian Jones

Monday May 21: day: Choice of walking:
"Drive to Tichborne [about 15 minutes] for a "figure of eight" walk. Distances, morning and afternoon can be adjusted to your wishes. Lunch at the "Tichborne Arms" - a charming village pub which welcomes hikers. Tichborne has a unique ancient church with some pre-Norman features and 2 highly unusual and entertaining claims to historical fame which I could recount to the Group over lunch or while walking. Delightful varied walking along open hillsides and riverside paths."
or visit to Portsmouth or Southampton.
    Evening: Roy Bailey concert.

Tuesday May 22: day: Choice of walking:
"drive towards Petersfield [about 30 minute] for a linear walk along the best section of the "Hangars' Way" - one of Hampshire's designated long distance paths.  This area is known as "Little Switzerland". One steep climb in the morning up "Shoulder of Mutton Hill"; but there are superb views on a clear day of South Hampshire and Sussex.
Lunch at the "Hawkley Inn" - another good village pub which welcomes walkers.
Continue in the afternoon to Selborne - another interesting and attractive village - including the descent of the famous zig zag path from the top of Selborne Hangar cut by the Naturalist, Gilbert White, and his brother in 1791."
or a visit to the Gilbert White Museum in Selborne?

Evening: ECD at Salisbury FD club - caller Rosemary Hunt; band Orion's Ring (with Jacqui).
